How to sign up?

All membership applications are provisional until they have been approved by the committee (this is a club constitution requirement). Payment must be made as part of your application.

Apply in person

Come in and fill in an application form.

Saturday afternoon between 2-6pm is a good time to visit the club. The weekly Allegro tournament is on and a committee member will probably be there to help you out. Monday evening is another good possibility.

Apply online

You may use Melbourne Chess Club's secure online registration and payment portal to apply for membership (click here).

Membership conditions

Membership is by application. All memberships need to be accepted by the committee.

For Concession, proof of entitlement is required.

Existing members get a $15 membership discount if you renew (and pay) for your 2016 membership by Jan 31st.

Half year memberships are available from 1st July for new members only. New members are defined as somebody who was not a member the previous year. Half year membership eligibility is also at the discretion of the committee.

From Nov 1 to Dec 31 each year, a new member may apply for a full year's membership for the following year, and get most the financial benefits of the remaining current year. The financial benefits for the current year includes tournament discounts, free lecturers, free beginners, endgame and openings groups, and visitors fees waived, but excludes free FM tournament status. You would be a normal member the following year.

For Country memberships you must be living at least 50km from Melbourne city.

Family memberships are for direct family, with a maximum of two adults but unlimited children, per family membership. Please note the intention of this membership is to support families with children and therefore the membership must include a junior.

Visitors are welcome at the club! You don't have to sign up for a membership: the first visit to the club is free, and subsequent visits cost a $5 visitors fee. We strongly recommend membership however!

Where does the money go?

The MCC is run entirely by member volunteers. All money paid to the club goes back into events (prize-money) and the club facilities.

Players of all strengths have the chance to win prize-money thanks to "rating categories" (Open, A, B and C group prizes for example).

Volunteering at the club

As you are joining a community it is expected that members lend a hand in operating our volunteer run organisation, and that we abide by the MCC Code of Conduct.

The Melbourne Chess Club has a non-discrimination policy, and we expect our members to contribute to a friendly, encouraging atmosphere in which we can all enjoy chess.

Please read more about how you can help out.
